Victor J. Meyer

U.S. Veteran

Victor J. Meyer, age 89 of St. Mary’s, died Sunday, April 14, 2013 at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. Born October 27, 1923 in Franklin County Indiana, he is the son of Louise (Nee: Munchel) and John Meyer. He married Marie Hartman November 12, 1947 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. Vic was a lifelong farmer after serving in the army during World War II. He was a member of the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183, the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271, St. Mary’s of the Rock Church, former FFA Advisory Board member, former St. Mary’s of the Rock Church Finance Committee member, a former director of Farm Bureau and a recipient of the Indiana Soil and Conservation Board’s Farmer of the Year and the Master Conservation Farmer awards.

Vic was one of those people that stayed busy. After retiring from farming he tried fishing but gave it up because it was too boring. He kept busy with several hobbies that included woodworking, gardening and wine making. According to his family he made excellent wine. He was also an avid Reds fan and liked reading about the Civil War, cowboys and the history of Indiana. His tastes were varied with some of his favorite foods included grits and fried apples, sour kraut and cherry pie. Vic and Marie liked to travel and visited every state but Delaware. Trips to Hawaii and Alaska were among their favorites. He enjoyed watching the rural American network RFD TV and Hee Haw. St. Mary’s Church was also an important part of his life of which he gave generously of his time and talents to many committees and countless church functions and events. Additionally he and Marie took care of the grotto on the church grounds for many years.

He is survived by his wife Marie; daughters and son-in-laws Grace and Arthur Schneider of Batesville, Yvonne and Ronald Schneider of Sunman, Mary Louise Meyer and Richard Cartwright of Oldenburg, Eileen and Tim Duff of Hamilton, Ohio, Carolyn and Dale Sorber of Rushville, Indiana, Susan and Brad Everage of Simpsonville, Kentucky; sons and daughter-in-laws Eugene and Karen Meyer of Brookville, Dennis an Marlene Meyer of Greensburg, Gary and Sue Meyer, Roy and Berna Meyer, Joe and April Meyer, John and Linda Meyer, Jerome and Nancy Meyer, all of Batesville; 33 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by sisters Angela Tebbe, Edna Bruns and two grandchildren.

Visitation is Wednesday, April 17th, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, April 18th, at St. Mary’s of the Rock Church with Rev. Humbert Moster O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. and the Prell-Bland American Legion. The family requests memorials to St. Mary’s Church Building Fund or the Srs. of St. Francis Convent.
