Carl E. Hazelwood

June 14, 1943 - February 21, 2022

Carl E. Hazelwood, age 78 of Batesville, died Monday, February 21, 2022 at his home. Born June 14, 1943 in Madison County Kentucky, he is the son of Goldie (Nee: Gadd) and William Hazelwood. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. After the service he would go into construction, retiring in 2003 as a business agent and recently became a 50-year member with the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) Local #741. He was also a member of the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and Tri-County Coonhunters. Carl filled his free time trap shooting, fishing and woodworking. He typically made furniture and items for the home. Family members commented that in every room of their homes you would find pieces he’s made. If he wasn’t in his shop or gone fishing, it was a safe bet he was shooting trap at Coonhunters – usually several nights a week. A bit of a prankster, Carl loved scaring people. Some of the grandkids still aren’t too sure of the dark or what it’s hiding. The family also indicated he was a prolific storyteller or as they explained it, “He loved to sit around the table and tell lies.” He is survived by his wife Bertha; daughter Bernice “Bernie” (Thomas) Essick; son William (Erin Wyder) Hazelwood, all of Batesville; sister Janet (Winston) Holt of Berea, Kentucky; grandsons Levi and Wyatt Essick as well as nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother Charles Hazelwood. Carl’s wishes were to be cremated. There are no services scheduled at this time.
