Herman J. Suttman, age 91 of Oldenburg, Indiana, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati. Born April 15, 1919 in Cincinnati he is the son of Hildagarde (Nee: Dramman) and Herman F. Suttman. He married Clarabel Schoetmer March 24, 1945 at St. Louis Church in Batesville and she preceded him in death August 8, 2008. He served in Army during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre earning three bronze stars and the Bronze Star Medal. Hermie worked in maintenance at Holy Family Church for 26 years as well as driving a bus for Batesville Public Schools 12 years and Hillenbrand Industries for 15 years.Hermie loved woodworking. He made furniture for his home as well as repairing any pieces that needed attention. What he enjoyed most when woodworking was a technique call intarsia where contrasting pieces of wood are cut out and inlaid in sections to create a picture. Other hobbies included feeding his finches, watching game shows, watching college football and unlike many people, cutting his grass. Cards were also a favorite pastime at the Suttman home. The family played a game called Hands & Feet, results would be kept and a trophy presented to the winner at year’s end. With his easy going nature it’s no surprise that visiting with family and friends was a simple pleasure he truly enjoyed.He was a member of Holy Family Church, the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183, the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271, Knights of St. John's Oldenburg Commandry and former member and past president of the Eagle Fire Company.He is survived by his daughters Nina Giesting of Oldenburg, Pam Scheele of Batesville, Bridgid Ronnebaum of St. Mary’s, Indiana; son Bob Suttman of San Marcos, California; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by his daughter Brenda Suttman and sisters Regina Gehring, Elenora Grassman, Alma Dramman and Bernadina Nunlist.Visitation is Monday, January 24th, from 4-8 p.m. with a rosary service at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 25th, at Holy Family Church with Rev. David Kobak O.F.M. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to the Batesville V.F.W. or Srs. of St. Francis Convent.
