Legacy

Our story

As one of the oldest and most recognizable landmarks in the area, Weigel Funeral Home is a stately ode to Batesville history. Established in 1880, our funeral home and cemetery has evolved greatly over the years to accommodate the evolving needs of our community. Yet our commitment to service remains the same. Even as we modernize our services and facilities, we stay true to our belief that honoring and celebrating life is deeply sacred and personal.

Our incredible staff

Helping families create lasting legacies is more than a job — it's our calling. We are here to support you in any way we can and will offer you the full attention, knowledge, and compassion you need.

1880s

In the 1800's, casket companies did not exist. Skilled woodworkers who were cabinet makers and furniture makers by trade, were relied on to make coffins. Many of these individuals not only ran their furniture businesses, but also became undertakers as well. It was not uncommon to divide their building with the furniture store in front and the undertaking business in the back.

1880s contd.

Weigel Funeral Home had a similar start in 1880, when cabinet maker William Tekulve of the neighboring town of Morris, opened "William Tekulve Undertaker." Two of six children, Mary and Charles Tekulve, eventually joined their father in the funeral business.

1906

Mary wed William Weigel and moved to Batesville to start a family.

1913

After the sudden death of Mary's brother Charles, William Weigel left his job at the American Furniture Factory and, with Joseph Burst, moved the undertaking business to Batesville, renaming it "Weigel & Burst Undertakers."

1930

William Weigel died suddenly, and Mary, a mother of 12, took over the funeral business.

Early 1930s: The Weigel & Burst partnership was dissolved, and Mary's eldest son, Sylvan, joined her as a partner in the newly named M.C. Weigel & Son Funeral Home.

1930s contd.

In 1933, the state of Indiana began requiring funeral director and embalmer licenses. Although exempt due to prior business involvement, Mary completed the necessary schooling and became one of the first women in Indiana to obtain both licenses. In 1934, Sylvan obtained his funeral director and embalmer licenses the year after his mother.

1978

Ron's mother, Rose, joined the funeral home when Ron purchased it from his uncle, Sylvan. She assisted in various capacities for over 30 years.

1986

Ron's brother, Chuck, joined the firm as a director's assistant and has since become a vital member of the funeral home.

Fall of 1995

Ron sold the business after many years of commitment to families in the Batesville area. Although the business changed ownership, Ron and Chuck remained active in the funeral home and community.

1996

Jay Reichmuth, the "new guy," joined the firm. Jay became a significant figure in the Batesville community through his involvement in local organizations.

2005

The funeral home closed its location on Walnut Street, which had served the area for over 100 years, and moved to the new facility at 151 West George Street, Batesville, IN.

2009

Michael Roemmich, the current manager, began practicing funeral service as a first-generation funeral director.

2013

Michael and his family moved outside Indiana, serving families in Kentucky, Florida, and Maine before returning to Batesville.

2023 - Present

Rose passed away, leaving an enduring legacy at the funeral home. Later, Jay Reichmuth also passed away, having established a strong legacy of service to the Batesville community.

To this day, we continue to carry on the legacy established all those years ago.
