Alfred J. Schaefer Jr.'s Obituary
Alfred J. Schaefer Jr., age 85 of Batesville, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born April 6, 1927 in Dearborn County Indiana, he is the son of Bertha (Nee: Bricker) and Alfred Schaefer Sr. He married Betty Gutzwiller October 25, 1952 at St. Louis Church in Batesville. A World War II veteran, he served in the army and was a member of St. Louis Church and the New Alsace American Legion Post #452.After the service, Junior opened a barber shop in Sunman, working 52 years before retiring in 2000. He always referred to being a “professional barber” and because of his efficiency, his business earned the nickname “the 60 second shop”. In his early years, he liked to rabbit and squirrel hunt, while fishing was a pastime he enjoyed throughout his life. He also bowled in a local league for many years, was an avid Reds fans, and watched Lawrence Welk. He loved going to yard sales and auctions and his family teased that he was an “antique collector”……of sorts. According to his family, he collected golf balls also. Living next to a golf course, he would often pick them up…………apparently whether you were finished with them or not. Junior also put out a huge garden each year that the whole family, both young and old, helped with and shared in. Garden season started early, as he always had his potatoes planted by St. Patrick’s day. His family fondly remembers Sunday dinners of his fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy. A people person, Junior especially enjoyed the clamor and commotion of having young children around. He is survived by his wife Betty Jo; daughters and son-in-laws Debra and Hoagy Wright of Batesville, Jo Ann and Alan Butt of Batesville, Kaye and Jed Darby of Greensburg, Diane and Tom Smith of Osgood; son and daughter-in-law Greg and Jackie Schaefer of Batesville; sister Rosemary Conrad of Cincinnati; brothers Harry (Butch) of Weisburg, Indiana, Raymond of Sunman, Elmer of Greenwood, Indiana, Robert of Batesville, Ralph of Sunman, Lester of Connersville, Indiana; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sister Bertha Mae Pfliegel and brothers John and Eugene. Visitation is Friday, March 22nd, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23rd, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to Margaret Mary Hospice or the New Alsace American Legion.
