Alfred J. "Tom" Litmer's Obituary
Alfred J. “Tom” Litmer, age 81 of Enochsburg, Indiana, died Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Heritage House in Greensburg. Born October 29, 1928 in Franklin County Indiana, he is the son of Christina (Nee: Huser) and Charles Litmer. He married Jeanette Fisher October 21, 1950 at St. John’s Church in Enochsburg. Tom was an ambulance driver in the army during the Korean War, earning two bronze stars. After the service, he worked in the finishing department of the Hill-Rom Company for 47 years before retiring in 1990. In addition to being a member at St. John’s Church, he also belonged to the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Knights of Columbus Council #1461.Tom enjoyed being outdoors. In his younger years he spent his free time rabbit and squirrel hunting as well as fishing. In later years, he developed a passion for gardening. Each year he planted a large garden and spent summer evenings working in it, often up until dark. The garden is next to the house and runs parallel to the road. In front he would plant a row of 35 – 40 tomato plants that would often grow to six feet in height. Nettie recalled when a couple of gentlemen from Cincinnati happened by and were so astonished at the size of the plants that they stopped to take each others’ picture standing next to them. On another occasion, seeing these huge plants, an elderly woman who was passing through the area, stopped and asked if she could purchase some tomatoes. Tom told her to help herself as he would not charge her for them. A little while later Tom & Nettie found the elderly woman and several of her friends working their way through the plot. Nettie who each year canned, froze and put up all of the vegetables quipped, “I was always glad to see that first frost.” Sports were another of Tom’s passions. He was an avid IU and Notre Dame fan, enjoyed watching televised college or professional games and could recall statistics and records for most of them.Tom is survived by his wife Nettie; son Jeff of Shelbyville, Indiana; sister Marcella “Dolly” Schwegman of New Point, Indiana and granddaughter Clara Rose Litmer. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Evelyn Ploeger, Martha Lester and brothers Alvin, Clifford and Carl “Dick” Litmer.
