Anthony J. Schantz's Obituary
Anthony J. Schantz, age 97 of Batesville, died Saturday, July 7, 2012 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born March 9, 1915 in Ripley County Indiana, he is the son of Anna (Nee: Erhardt) and Anthony Schantz. He married Ida Jean Bischoff March 5, 1946 at St. Anthony’s Church in Morris, Indiana and she preceded him in death June 27, 1984. He was a member of St. Louis Church.Tony was a farmer and his children still chuckle that “dad was always talking to his cows.” They also remember how strong he was from a lifetime of working with his hands and because of all those years of raising cattle, steak was always a favorite as well as sweet corn from his garden. While he did enjoy a beer or glass of wine occasionally, he never smoked which was a rarity for his generation. In his younger years he loved to fish and hunt and was especially proud of Joy and Jule, his beloved fox hounds. Tony was also a huge Colts fan, listened to country and western music and as a staunch Democrat, talking politics was another favorite pastime. An avid card player, the kids explained that “dad looked forward to playing Solo and 500, but certainly took both games seriously.” Misplay a card and not only were you in trouble, you probably wouldn’t be a partner again. They also shared that as a boy, Tony’s father owned the horse drawn hearse used by the Weigel Funeral Home and it was his job to bring the matched pair of horses to town on the day of a funeral and hitch them to the hearse. He is survived by his daughter Jane Wilson of Fishers, Indiana; sons Anthony R. of Batesville, Daniel of Batesville, Charles of Bluffton, Indiana; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Anna Herbst, Helen Rieskamp, Marion Schantz, Teresia Schantz, Victorine Crum, Antoinette Schantz and his brother Sylvester.Visitation is Tuesday, July 10th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11th, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M. officiating followed by burial in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Batesville Food Pantry or St. Andrew’s Activity Fund.
