Arthur J. Gartenman's Obituary
Arthur J. Gartenman, age 89 of Batesville, died Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Margaret Mary Hospital. Born March 25, 1920 in Ripley County Indiana, he is the son of Mary (Nee: Krieger) and George Gartenman. He married Rita Tebbe June 6, 1945 at St. Louis Church in Batesville. Art was a farmer and for 40 years was a sales representative for Watkins Products. He was a member of St. Louis Church.Art was a farmer at heart. He enjoyed gardening and even after retiring and moving to town, he still spent much of his time at the farm either tending to his garden or coaxing family members to help pick blackberry’s and raspberry’s which grew wild along the edges of his fields. Before Rita’s death, they regularly played cards with friends and the game was usually 500 and Solo. Although not necessarily an avid sports fan, he did follow Indiana University basketball, but the teams’ performance in recent years often left him disappointed. Up until recent years, Art also liked to go bass fishing, but lost interest in later years as health issues slowed him down. Those who knew Art knew that he loved a good parade. Batesville hosts several each year and if you attended, you could expect to see Art enjoying the festivities. He is survived by his daughter Donna Feller and son Dan Gartenman, both of Batesville, as well as nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. In addition to his wife Rita and his parents, he is also preceded in death by brothers Alvin and Eugene Gartenman. Visitation is Tuesday, January 26th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. A private family rosary service will be held. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 27th, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Rob Hankee officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to St. Louis School or Phi Beta Psi Cancer Research.
