August John "Augie" Lamping's Obituary
August John “Augie” Lamping, age 96 of Hamburg, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at St. Andrews Health Campus in Batesville, Indiana. Born August 11, 1929, in Franklin County Indiana, he is the son of John and Marie (Nee: Bedel) Lamping. He married Bernice Wagner on May 5, 1956, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Hamburg.
Augie was a former member of St. Anne’s Parish where he served as a lector and Eucharist Minister and was currently a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church – St. Maurice Campus.
Augie was a mechanic for 35 years and owned and operated the Oldenburg Garage, before retiring in 1995. He was an Army veteran during the Korean War, serving from 1951 – 1953. During his time in the service, Augie visited Rome and was able to be in the audience to see the Pope. Augie was very kindhearted individual, especially a time in the service he lent money to his buddy from Ohio so he could come home to get married.
Augie was a 50-year member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of St. John Commandery #276 of Hamburg and a member of the Oldenburg Conservation Club. He served on the Advisory Board for the Salt Creek Democrats and was a former Committee Chairman for St. Anne’s Parish. He was the Chairman of the Building Committee at St. Anne's, which he was instrumental in the rebuilding of the church after the devastating tornado struck Hamburg in 1974.
Augie was an avid outdoorsman. He thoroughly loved taking part in any type of hunting, with coon hunting being one of his favorites which he did for over 55 years. He was a jack of all trades being able to do or fix just about anything. Though his true passion was his family and prior to his stroke over 30 years ago, he loved playing and spending time with his grand kids.
He is survived by his wife Bernice Lamping of Hamburg; sons Dennis (Cindy) Lamping, Roger (Janice) Lamping, Francis (Bev) Lamping, and Mark (Brenda) Lamping, all of Hamburg; sister Irene (Walter) Meyer of Batesville; brothers Cletus (Betty) Lamping of Batesville and John (Carol) Lamping of Oldenburg; sister-in-law Alice Lamping of Oldenburg; 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, with one on the way.
In addition to his parents, Augie was preceded in death by his granddaughter Corinne Lamping; sisters Angela Demoret, Bernadette Harpring, and Rosemary Nobbe and brothers Jerome, Carl, Francis, Joseph, and Alphonse Lamping.
Visitation is Saturday, January 31st, from 9 – 11 a.m., at Weigel Funeral Home in Batesville. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m., at St. Catherine of Siena Church – St. Maurice Campus, with Fr. Bill Ehalt officiating. The burial will be at St. Anne’s Cemetery, with military graveside rites being conducted by the Ripley County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3183 and by the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 of Batesville. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anne’s Cemetery Fund or the Corinne’s Believers Memorial Scholarship.
