Bertha G. Hoelker's Obituary
Bertha G. Hoelker, age 89 of Batesville, died Monday, March 1, 2010, at The Waters of Batesville. Born July 13, 1920 in Batesville, she is the daughter of Elizabeth (Nee: Kessing) and Frederick Grieshop. She married Louis Hoelker July 10, 1943 at St. Louis Church in Batesville and he preceded her in death May 24, 2008. She was a member of St. Louis Church and the St. Louis Ladies Society. Although a homemaker for most of her life, she worked as an operator with the Batesville Telephone Company for five years and as a clerk at Anne’s Dry Goods for ten years.Like many of her generation, Bertha used her talents to provide for her family. Her daughters remember mom’s sewing abilities and that she made their clothes until they reached their teens. She was also an excellent baker, who according to her girls made a chiffon cake that was simply sinful. For many years she had an in home business making wedding cakes which she sold for the grand sum of $25 each. An avid card player, she belonged to a card club for more than fifty years. The girls fondly recall when it was mom’s turn to host the club because it meant the rare treat of soda’s and popcorn. During her quiet time, she liked to read romance novels and was avid fan of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy”. Bertha was very devout. She attended mass daily and was always willing to help with any task whether it was as a greeter or stuffing envelopes.She is survived by her daughters Angie Raeon and Rita Hoelker, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by her daughter Mary Jane Wernke; sisters Marie Spraul, Sr. Mary Xavier Grieshop O.S.F., Helen Boberg, Angela Perry, Edna Barwick, Martha Herche and brother Fr. Gale Grieshop.Visitation is Friday, March 5th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home with a rosary service at 4 p.m. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, March 6th, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Bernard Varghese officiating and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to St. Louis School Tuition Angels or Oldenburg Academy.
