Edward J. "John" Schumacher's Obituary
Edward J. Schumacher, age 90 of Batesville, died Friday, July 27, 2012 at his home. Born October 30, 1921 in Batesville, he is the son of Mary (Nee: Suding) and Edward B. Schumacher. He married Arvilla Stevens May 17, 1943 in St. Joseph, Missouri while in the Air Force during World War II, before being sent overseas. John was a member of St. Louis Church, the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183, the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association. He spent 76 years selling cars and horse trailers in addition to breeding and selling horses. His daughters said “Dad had three passions in life.” In order they were horses, tractors and cars. His love for horses was widely known and he spent most of his adult life working with children involved in 4H so he could pass his on knowledge and help others discover the joy of being around horses. His purchase of the quarter horse “Poker Player” began a decade’s long breeding and raising operation which over time would involve his daughters as well. At its death, that beloved horse was buried on the family farm along with all its records. After the war, John became a partner in the Jobst and Schumacher car dealership on the corner of State Road 46 and Huntersville Road. And although he preferred Chevy’s he did have a De Soto dealership back in the day. Over time he added horse trailers to the business and in the mid 60’s he sold the car business to one of his employees and opened up Six Pine Ranch Trailer Sales, where he maintained one of the nation’s largest inventories. His family explained that, “He was a natural salesman. It began in school where he would trade pocketknives for one thing or another.” While he didn’t watch much T.V., he was a huge fan of western movies, especially John Wayne and Clint Eastwood films. He is survived by he wife Arvilla; daughters Victoria Creeger of Batesville, Sherry Ertel of Sunman, Kris Lindemann, Kim Oblinger, Mary Jon McCaig and Amy Gallo, all of Batesville; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded death by sisters Ethel and Loretta Werner. Visitation is Tuesday, July 31st, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services follow at 1:30 p.m. at St. Louis Church with Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to Hospice of Margaret Mary Hospital or the Batesville E.M.S. 10.
