Eugene F. Schoetmer's Obituary
Eugene F. Schoetmer, age 76 of Oldenburg, died Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at The Waters in Batesville. Born April 20, 1932 in Batesville, he is the son of Mary (Nee: Woerst) and Bernard Schoetmer. He married Jo Ann Effing on July 30, 1960 at St. Louis Church in Batesville.Gene served in the Navy during the Korean War and after the service he worked for the Hill-Rom Company in the Maintenance Department 50 years before retiring in 1999. Working maintenance and being in the Navy kind of define him. He was affectionately known to his family as “Mr. Fix It” and a love of water was something he never lost during his lifetime. Often he and Jo Ann or the kids would get in the car to take a ride and they would predictably end up stopping at a river, lake or pond to spend some time before heading home. Those that knew him know about his tremendous sense of humor and the seemingly endless jokes he knew. Gene also enjoyed woodworking. He is a member of Holy Family Church in Oldenburg; the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183; Prell-American Legion Post #271 and was a former volunteer fireman for Batesville, helping bring the town’s first ladder truck back from the factory in Michigan. Gene is survived by his wife Jo Ann; daughter Doris Gilbert of Indianapolis, Indiana; sons Dwayne of Oldenburg, Darrel of Bellevue, Kentucky, Dennis of Grand Rapids, Michigan; sister Mary Louise Allen of Lawrenceburg, Indiana; granddaughters Katie and Annie Schoetmer; grandson Sam Schoetmer; step granddaughter Samantha England and step grandson Keith Crum. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Irene Fritsch, Luella Baumer, Mary Allen, Clarabel Suttman and brother Bernard Schoetmer.Visitation is Saturday, November 15th, from 9 – 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church. Funeral services follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. David Kobak O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion. The family requests memorials to Phi Beta Psi Sorority Cancer Research.
