Gerald J. Meyer Sr.'s Obituary
Gerald J. Meyer Sr., age 75 of Sunman, died Saturday, December 27, 2014 at the I.U. Saxony Hospital in Fishers, Indiana. Born January 7, 1939 in Batesville, he is the son of Rosemary (Nee: Bedel) and John Meyer. He married Katherine Bales August 29, 1972 in Osgood, Indiana and she survives.
Jerry had two passions........family and farming. He loved having his family around and doted on the grandkids. He worked as a lineman for the Batesville Phone Company which would later become Verizon and after his retirement he enthusiastically became a full time farmer and got into raising goats which his family teased were his other "kids". They also liked to rib him about his fondness of polka music and the Polka Joe Show. They fondly remember the family lunches on Sundays after church, along with his ability to fix anything, visits to the casino in addition to working crossword puzzles and word searches. Like many farmers, he had an affinity for antique tractors, John Deere in particular, and enjoyed restoring them.
He is survived by his wife Kathy; daughters Beth Herbert and Jennifer Meyer, both of Batesville, Kathy Einhaus of Osgood, Cindy Allen of Batesville; sons Dave and Jerry Jr., both of Sunman; sisters Shirley Rennekamp of Sunman, Mary Moorman and Janet Rehberger, both of Oldenburg; brothers Norman of Morris, John of Greensburg, Harold of Bloomington, Greg of Hamburg and 10 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sister Laverne Goedel and brother Virgil Meyer.
Visitation is Tuesday, December 30th, from 4 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home with a rosary service at 4 p.m. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 31st, at St. John's Church in Osgood and burial will follow at St. Pius Cemetery near Sunman. The family requests memorials to St. Pius Church.
