Herbert E. Grubb Jr.'s Obituary
Herbert E. Grubb Jr., age 79 of Osgood, died Thursday, September 20, 2012 at his home. Born August 6, 1933 in Springfield, Illinois, he is the son of Ava (Nee: Manning) and Herbert Grubb Sr. He married Mary Mischler July 23, 1955 at St. Anthony’s Church in Dayton, Ohio. Herb served in the Air Force during the Korean War and after the service would become a Vice President for K.W. Atwater Engineering and would spend 10 years as manager of the engine shop for Com-Air Airlines before retiring. His family talked about his passion of working with his hands. For many years he stayed busy with his vegetable garden and building boats. A bit of a daredevil, he loved flying and scuba diving. He also liked to fish, get on his John Deere tractor and mow as well as take care of his horses. Herb was also always willing to assist others. He would often rescue stranded travelers from winter snow storms or spring and summer rains and flooding, bring them to the house for a cup of coffee, use of the phone and whatever else they needed. He and Mary enjoyed traveling with visits to Holland and Hawaii among their favorites. Herb also liked watching Mash, The History Channel and Green Acres. His family teased him about being similar to the Oliver character on Green Acres. But all kidding aside, he was apparently an expert griller whose steaks and shish-kabobs were second to none.Herb is survived by his wife Mary; daughter Jean Marie Patterson of Evansville, Indiana; sons Herbert III of Miami, Florida, Robert of Daleville, Alabama, David of Osgood, Michael of Florence, Kentucky; brothers Richard and Donald, both of Springfield, Illinois; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his son Richard; sister Patty Mae Grubb and grandson Jonathon Stoddard.Visitation is Monday, September 24th, from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 25th, at St. Louis Church in Batesville with his nephew Rev. Tom Mischler officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. The family requests memorials to the Hospice of Margaret Mary Hospital.
