Irene P. Merkel's Obituary
Irene P. Merkel, age 91 of Hamburg, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Margaret Mary Hospital. Born September 12, 1916 in Franklin County Indiana, she is the daughter of Josephine (Nee: Cord) and Michael Bedel. She married Herman Merkel February 25, 1941 at St. Anne’s Church in Hamburg.Irene enjoyed putting in a big garden and canning what she raised. She also enjoyed baking, needlework and embroidery until her health in recent years slowed her down. She especially liked spending time with her family and being at home in her favorite chair. Irene was a member of St. Anne’s Church and the St. Anne’s Ladies Society. She is survived by daughters and son-in-law Theresa and Lawrence Bedel of Oldenburg, Edith Lamping of Hamburg; sons and daughter-in-laws Jerry and Shirley Merkel of Batesville, Bob Merkel of Hamburg, Ken and Missy Merkel of Greensburg; sister Esther Goss of Connersville; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by her sisters Clara Niehoff, Martha Brunsman, Mildred Nobbe; brothers Raymond, Albert and Thomas Bedel; granddaughter Karen Bedel and son-in-law Joe Lamping.Visitation will be Tuesday, April 8th, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9th, at St. Anne’s Church with Rev. David Kobak O.F.M. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to New Horizons or St. Anne’s Cemetery Fund.
