Jerry L. Crone's Obituary
Jerry L. Crone, age 77 of Batesville, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Born August 2, 1934 in Delphi, Indiana, he is the son of Florence (Nee: Viney) and Charles Crone. He married Shirley Bowman June 30, 1956 in Delphi. Jerry served in the army after the service became a mechanical engineer. He worked for Wilson Sporting Goods in Chicago, Alcoa in Dayton and was Vice President of Engineering for the Hill-Rom Company. Although he had many interests, the first thing to come to his family’s mind when describing him was avid outdoorsman. He loved the outdoors whether it was golfing, volleyball, hunting or trapping. A talented athlete, he played basketball, held several track and field records at Delphi and starred at quarterback with scholarship offers before a knee injury ended that opportunity. Jerry also liked to drive or “take rides”. His sons mentioned “dad probably traveled every road in the tri-state and was familiar with every pond and fishing hole”, which was essential since fishing was also one of those favorite outdoor activities.Time spent with family was important, especially since he was working full time and attended college where he earned a Master’s Degree in engineering and another one in business. Quiet time might be spent watching Jeopardy, something sports related or reading science fiction. Some other favorite family memories include his love for food, a good vodka tonic with either anchovy or blue cheese stuffed olives, never owning a car with less than eight cylinders, life- long subscriptions to National Geographic as well as Scientific American and one of his favorite sayings, “Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn.” He is survived by his wife Shirley; sons Mark of Danvers, Illinois, Thomas of Cupertino, California, Brian of Kent, Ohio; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 5 p.m. Wednesday, October 5th, at the funeral home followed by military rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. Immediately following services a reception will be held at Hillcrest Country Club where the family will receive friends. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting memorials to Phi Beta Psi Sorority Cancer Research.
