John W. Nordmeyer's Obituary
John W. Nordmeyer, age 96 of Morris, Indiana, died Monday, August 24, 2009, at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. Born March 31, 1913 in Morris, he is the son of Anna (Nee: Reis) and John A. Nordmeyer. He married Eleanor Brum May 12, 1937 at St. Louis Church in Batesville and she preceded him in death September 17, 2008. John purchased the Morris Feed Mill from his father and uncle in 1964 and worked at the mill his entire life. The mill has been owned by the Nordmeyer family since 1911. He was a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council #1461, as well as a member of the Knights of St. John and St. Anthony’s Church in Morris. He also has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Batesville State Bank and Margaret Mary Hospital. For over 25 years he was a member of the Morris Volunteer Fire Department and was instrumental in bringing water and sewer service to Morris.Over his 96 years, John developed a variety of interests. He liked vegetable and flower gardening and was especially proud of his roses. His children teased about dad “growing everything from peanuts to gladiolas and the same item planted in its same spot each year.” In his earlier years he liked hunting. Yearly rituals included John and his buddies traveling to northern Indiana for pheasant hunting and after church on Thanksgiving morning, rabbit hunting the rest of the day. He loved spending time with his family and often played baseball with his children when they were younger and later delighted in watching the grandchildren and great grandchildren play. An avid sports fan, he liked attending Colts, Bengal’s and Red’s games or sitting on the porch and listening on the radio. His faith was important to him and he would pray the rosary daily. Like many of the parishioners of St. Anthony’s, over the years he and Eleanor volunteered often whenever help was needed for festivals and events. An enthusiastic card player, he played pinochle, euchre and 7up, but his favorite was 500. The kid’s poked fun at John’s looonnnngggg time devotion to Jeopardy, The Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right. These were pleasures he enjoyed right up to the time of his death. He and Eleanor enjoyed taking trips and were very much world travelers. Some of their destinations included Israel, Jerusalem and Portugal, but a month’s stay in Germany was probably the one that stands out.John is survived by his daughter Mary Beth Brunsman of Cincinnati, Ohio; sons Kenneth of Terre Haute, Indiana, Clifford of Batesville, Paul of Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Charles of Johnstown, Ohio, Michael of Batesville, James of Toledo, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
