John E. Pohlman's Obituary
John E. Pohlman, age 84 of Batesville, died Friday, December 27, 2013 at Margaret Mary Health. Born June 9, 1929 in Batesville, he is the son of Bertha (Nee: Timmerman) and John T. Pohlman. He served in the army during the Korean War. After the service, John ran a couple of gas stations which led to positions with Cooper Tires and Gates Rubber Company before becoming a salesman and sales manager in the health care industry for over 30 years. He married Kathleen Oesterling September 15, 1951 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg and she preceded him in death September 18, 2010. John was a member of St. Louis Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #1461, a 50 year member of the Prell-Bland American Legion and a former member of the Oldenburg Conservation Club.An outdoor enthusiast, it’s not surprising many of John’s favorite activities involved being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, loved to play golf and did quite a bit of hunting in his day. Rabbit, squirrel, bird and deer hunting were among his favorites. For many years he sponsored an archery tournament, on his property outside of town, he called the Peach Tree Open. His family always remembers dad having a boat even from their earliest memories. Although not a gardener, he raised tomatoes and was a devoted back yard bird feeder who literally had the blue birds eating out of his hands. Growing up with and caring for bird dogs, he liked having them around, but did not want them in the house. A great story teller, his grandkids loved to listen to him entertain them about life back in the day. And if you knew John, you knew he would often break out in song whenever and wherever the mood would strike. He is survived by daughters Mary Pohlman of Westerville, Ohio, Jan Enneking of Batesville, Linda Wolters of Indianapolis, Indiana, Lisa Durkin of Waconia, Minnesota; son Tim Pohlman of Batesville; sister Marilyn Elliot of Sun City, Arizona; fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife and parents.Visitation is Thursday, January 2nd, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday, January 3rd at Holy Family Church with Rev. David Kobak O.F.M. officiating. Burial will follow at St. Louis Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183. The family requests memorials to the Prell-Bland American Legion.
