Kathleen E. Pohlman's Obituary
Kathleen E. Pohlman, age 81 of Batesville, died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born February 10, 1929 in Oldenburg, Indiana, she is the daughter of Leona (Nee: Meyer) and William Oesterling. She married John Pohlman September 15, 1951 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. Katie was a homemaker and a member of the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 Ladies Auxiliary and St. Louis Church.Family was of utmost importance to Katie. While she dearly loved spending time with her family, she especially cherished having her grandchildren and great grandchildren around. Her devotion to small children was a lifelong passion as she spent countless hours volunteering with mentally challenged and Downs Syndrome children helping them learn. She also enjoyed many hobbies. She liked playing cards pretty much anytime and was a long time member of a card club with several of her friends. For years, Sundays were spent at the family farm and usually before the day was done, a game or two of cards among the adults would occur. She was also an avid Reds fan and developed a passion for baseball at a young age when she played with her siblings in the barnyard. Holiday’s were also special to Katie, having the family gather, cooking a large traditional holiday meal and making certain no one left hungry. Her family talked about what an excellent cook she was and although “everything she made was good,” they especially remember her roast beef, fried chicken and her pies. Around Batesville, she was well known for her butterscotch pie. In her earlier years she liked flower and vegetable gardening and according to her children made some of the most delicious bread and butter pickles you’ll ever taste. Katie also had a love for music and dancing. Big band music, rat pack crooners and Johnny Mathis were among her favorites. Over the years she did needle point, crocheting and ceramics and for those who knew her, will recall she affectionately called her husband “Johnny”.She is survived by son Timothy of Batesville; daughters Mary Pohlman of Westerville, Ohio, Janice Enneking of Batesville, Linda Wolters of Indianapolis, Indiana, Lisa Durkin of Waconia, Minnesota; sister Helen Enneking of Oldenburg; brother John Oesterling of Oldenburg; 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
