LaVerne M. Werner's Obituary
LaVerne M. Werner, age 84 of Sunman, died Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Born November 22, 1929 in Dearborn County Indiana, she is the daughter of Mena (Nee: Boerster) and Henry Hildebrand. She married Louis Werner Jr. August 14, 1948 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Penntown and he preceded her in death on August 23, 2012. She was a member of St. Jacob's United Church of Christ in Blue Creek and worked for French's Locker 23 years before retiring in 1991.
Like many women of her generation, she relied on her abilities to provide for her family. She made most of her children's clothes, quilted, raised a large garden, canning the excess for winter use and could mend or fix all kinds of things. A wonderful cook and baker, her cheesecake and pumpkin pies were second to none according to her family. They also talked about mom's love of early morning walks, visiting friends, watching game shows, her wonderful sense of humor, trips to Little Nashville and treating herself to ice cream from Shirley's Swirls on Route 52. She enjoyed playing cards including Marbles, 500 and 7up along with reading short stories. A devout woman, LaVerne regularly read from her bible and lived by the golden rule. Her family talked about how she put others first, be it a friend or a stranger, making sure they needs were taken care of before hers and that she possessed the patience of a saint. For all of her blessings, none were more important or gave her more pride than her beloved grandchildren.
LaVerne is survived by daughters Joan Horner, Joyce Batta and sons Louis and Robert Werner, all of Sunman; sisters Virginia Steelman of Harrison, Ohio, Patricia Benis of Sunman; brothers Marvin Hildebrand of Sunman, Donald Hildebrand of Batesville, Herschel Hildebrand of Sunman; step brother Marvin Hacker of Penntown; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Visitation is Monday, August 4th, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services follow at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Lynn Busch officiating and burial at St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery in Penntown. The family requests memorials to St. Jacob's or St. John's United Church of Christ.
