Louis Werner Jr.'s Obituary
Louis Werner Jr., age 85 of Sunman, died Thursday, August 23, 2012 at the Heritage House in Greensburg. Born June 9, 1927 in Franklin Co. Indiana, he is the son of Louetta (Nee: Shotwell) and Louis Werner Sr. He married La Verne Hildebrand August 14, 1948 at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Penntown, Indiana. Louie served in the army from 1946 to 1947 and was stationed in Japan. He spent 20 years at Hill-Rom as an assembler before retiring in 1989 and was a member of the St. Leon American Legion Post #464.Louie loved being outdoors. He fished, hunted squirrel, rabbits and deer, was a trapper and played golf. He was also one of the original “turtle gang” from St. Nicholas when you could still trap and use real turtle to make turtle soup. Before working at Hill-Rom, many will remember that Louie spent years butchering and processing meat for people. His family talked about how he liked getting in the car and going for rides. They teased that he could drive a hundred miles a day having never left Sunman and when they’d go visit people, Louie was ready to head on to the next stop about the time he warmed up his chair – much to the chagrin of La Verne who had planned to stay a little longer. Not all of his hobbies involved the outdoors though. For years he and La Verne bowled in a mixed couples league and attended square dances, where occasionally Louie was the caller. He was a Reds and Bengals fan, liked game shows and he and La Verne enjoyed volunteering their time to help with Legion functions. His greatest joy was having his grandkids around. He is survived by his wife La Verne; daughters Joan Horner and Joyce Batta, both of Sunman; sons Louis and Robert, also of Sunman; sisters Margie Maham of Cincinnati, Ohio, Clara Bonar of Liberty, Indiana, Hazel Miller of Hamilton, Ohio; nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Mary Eckstein, Esther Bonello, Lena Werner, Thelma Folenius and his brother Raymond. Visitation is Saturday, August 25th, from 9-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Peter Frye of St. John’s United Church of Christ Penntown, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the St. Leon American Legion Post #464. The family requests memorials to the Heritage House Alzheimer’s Research or the St. Leon American Legion.
