Madeline A. Ritter's Obituary
Madeline A. Ritter, age 98 of Batesville, died Friday, February 17, 2012 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus in Batesville. Born October 28, 1913 in Louisville, Kentucky, she is the daughter of Henrietta (Nee: Heim) and William Kimmel. She married Carl Ritter Sr. June 4, 1935 at St. Matthews Evangelical Church in Louisville and preceded her in death April 21, 1982. A homemaker, she was also a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Batesville, the Brown County Garden Club and a Docent for the Brown County Historical Society in Nashville, Indiana.Madeline had many interests and hobbies. An accomplished knitter, her family discussed the sweater vests she made for many of them and the beautiful personalized Christmas stockings that incorporated Santa on them. Other hobbies included flower gardening, crossword puzzles and bowling. She also liked playing cards, particularly Bridge and was an avid reader of most anything from romance novels to history to fiction. Watching sports was another favorite pastime with golf and the Olympics among her favorites along with the game show Jeopardy. Madeline’s family fondly remembers her roast beef, salmon croquettes and springerle’s, a traditional German cookie made during the holidays. The grandchildren, on the other hand, were crazy about her chocolate chip cookies. She is survived by her sons Carl Jr. of Merritt Island, Florida, Eugene of Batesville; grandchildren Mark, Glenn, Gene, Kurt, Jade, Hans and Brandon Ritter and 21 great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Thelma Kerr, Henrietta Bauer, Rozell Kimmel, Mildred Zirnheld; brother Carl Kimmel and great granddaughter Gemma Ritter.Visitation is Tuesday, February 21st, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services follow at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. David Johnston officiating. Following lunch at St. John’s United Church of Christ, a 3:30 p.m. graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Greenwood, Indiana. The family requests memorials to St. John’s United Church of Christ.
