Martin Edward Merkel's Obituary
Martin E. Merkel, age 86 of Batesville, Indiana, died Thursday, October 26, 2006, at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. Born February 14, 1920 in Ripley County Indiana, he is the son of Emma (Nee: Timmerson) and Edward Merkel. He married Mary Ann Stecher on May 14, 1949 in Cincinnati, Ohio.Martin served in the Army during World War II and then worked in the maintenance department at the Romweber Furniture Factory in Batesville for 41 years, before retiring. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Oldenburg Knights of St. John’s.He is survived by his wife Mary Ann of Batesville; daughters Ruth (Alan) Roell of Indianapolis, IN and Margie (Rob) Lipsey of Brownsburg, IN; sons Marty (Connie) Merkel, Joe Merkel and Tony Merkel, all of Indianapolis, IN, Larry (Teresa) Merkel and Jim Merkel, both of Batesville, IN; sister Loretta Bedel of Morris, IN; brother Ed Merkel of Batesville, IN and 12 grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Edna Retzner; brothers Paul, Fred, Herman & Urban Merkel and Tony Etter.Visitation is Sunday, October 29th, from 1-4 p.m. at the funeral home, with a rosary service at 3 p.m. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday, October 30th, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Oldenburg, with Rev. Rock Travnikar officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183. The family requests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
