Omer F. Prickel's Obituary
Omer F. Prickel, age 84 of Batesville, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, at University Hospital in Cincinnati. Born October 20, 1924 in Morris, Indiana, he is the son of Rosa (Nee: Roell) and John Prickel. He married Naomi Fisher July 17, 1948 at St. John’s Church in Enochsburg, Indiana. He was a member of St. Louis Church in Batesville where he also served as a Eucharistic Minister. He served as Picnic Chairman for St. Anne’s Church in Hamburg, Indiana, for 20 years prior to joining St. Louis Church. In addition, he was a beneficial member of the Eagles Club Aerie #1130 for over 50 years. From 1962-1965 and 1972-1976, he was the Franklin County Commissioner and spent 26 years as a member of the Salt Creek Township Advisory Board. Omer was a life long farmer in Hamburg. Later in life, he enjoyed golfing and taking his motorcycle out for a ride right up to the time of his death. An avid Pinochle, 500 and Solo player, his family teased him about never wanting to lose. It was not uncommon to rehash a hand days or weeks later. He liked baseball and was a devoted Cincinnati Reds fan. He was also someone who enjoyed cars and driving Cadillacs. A staunch Democrat, he was actively involved in politics most of his life and as a regular of the McDonald’s morning coffee klatch, would often be a part of some spirited conversations over the management of current events by local, state and national leaders. Omer and Naomi (known to many as “Fid”) were deeply devoted to each other and through the years shared many great experiences together. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last July with family & friends. They loved to take vacations including a cruise and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was probably Omer’s favorite destination. When making the trip with a group of friends, he especially liked the boy’s “afternoon out.” Being a Hoosier, he was a fan of racing and he and Naomi had annual tickets to the Indianapolis 500 for nearly 30 years. In recent years, a favorite pastime for both was lunch out and an afternoon ride they would take daily in the country. Omer is survived by his wife Naomi; sister Rita Stahley of Cincinnati; brother Alban Prickel of Morris, also by Naomi’s sister, Shirley (Scoop) Giesting of Enochsburg and her brother, Robert Fisher of Greensburg as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by brothers Max, Cletus, David and Ivo Prickel. Visitation is Wednesday, April 22nd, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home with the rosary at 4pm. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, April 23rd, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Dennis Duvelius officiating and burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the St. Louis Cemetery fund or Margaret Mary Community Hospital cafeteria fund.
