Raymond E. Roell's Obituary
Raymond E. Roell, age 87 of Batesville, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born June 7, 1925 in Ripley County Indiana, he is the son of Clara (Nee: Merkel) and Otto Roell Sr. He married Dorothy Batta April 26, 1949 at St. Peter’s Church in St. Peter’s Indiana and she preceded him in death February 15, 2005. Ray farmed and worked as a carpenter 44 years, 26 of those for Steinkamp and Co. He served in the Army’s First Division of the Fifth Calvary as a medic during World War II.Ray loved to tell stories about his experiences from the war and from his carpentry days. He was equally proud of his service as field medic as he was of his construction skills. He prided himself in doing things right. To say Ray was a huge Reds fan would be an understatement. He loved to listen or watch the Reds play and rarely missed a game. A farmer at heart, he raised a vegetable garden for years and grew grapes as well that would become jellies and juice. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and counted a trip to Hawaii among their favorites. He is survived by his daughters Marilyn Todd and Sharon Eckstein, both of Sunman; sons James of Batesville, Earl of Batesville, David of Indianapolis; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by his sister Adeline Jaehnen; brothers Cornelius, Otto Jr., Lawrence, Maurice, Elmer, Alexander and one grandson.Visitation is Friday, January 11th, from 4-7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home with a rosary service at 4 p.m. Funeral services are 9:30 a.m. Saturday January 12th, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. There will be no visitation at the funeral home Saturday morning prior to services. The family requests memorials to the Batesville Fire Department, the New Point Fire Department or the American Red Cross.
