Richard M. Schmidt's Obituary
Richard M. Schmidt, age 78 of Batesville, died Sunday January 24, 2010, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Shirley May (Nee: Dahl) and his three children: Susan (Don) Ratcliffe of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Shelly (Scrub) Wallpe of Hamilton, Ohio and Peter (Susan) Schmidt of Mishawaka, Indiana, as well as five grandchildren: Samantha, Allyson, Jacob and Joshua Schmidt, Leland Ratcliffe and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents Ethel (Nee: Neuman) and Wenzel Schmidt and sister Virginia Kievit. He was born in January 15, 1932 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and will be missed by family and friends. Dick enjoyed several interests. An avid reader, he especially liked biographies and history. He also loved watching sports and being from Wisconsin, he was a life long Packers fan. A talented woodworker, Dick has created numerous pieces for his wife and daughters. A stickler for detail, his family often teased him about being methodical and organized. He retired in 1990 after 40 in sales with the Hill-Rom Company.Friends may call from 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, January 30th, at the funeral home. A memorial celebration service of Dick’s life will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jill Kepler Campbell officiating. The family requests memorials to the Hansen Center.
