Rita E. Gehring's Obituary
Rita E. Gehring, age 85 of Oldenburg, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. Born September 2, 1923, in Cincinnati, she is the daughter of Marie (Nee: Skudlas) and William Luchte. She married Leander Gehring April 12, 1947 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. She was a homemaker as well as a member of Holy Family Church and for many years served on the Freudenfest Committee.Like many who grew up during the depression, Rita was hard working and learned to be self sufficient. Each year a large garden was put in and her children remember sitting at the kitchen table cleaning and preparing fruits and vegetables to be canned……bushels and bushels of produce piled so high “you couldn’t see the person across the table from you.” Her green thumb extended beyond the garden to flowers. She tended to the Iris in the front of the house and was proud of her efforts each year when they bloomed so beautifully. As much as she enjoyed them, her favorite flowers were yellow roses. Rita enjoyed working at a variety of arts and crafts projects; especially patch quilting and attended quilting shows regularly. A good cook, it was her baking that her family fondly recalls. The aroma of baked bread, apple pies and coffee cakes often filled the house. Those that knew her, remember her egg business. Her kids on the other hand teased her about her beloved chickens. She is survived by daughter Irene Fullenkamp of Oldenburg; sons Marvin, Mike and Tom, all of Oldenburg, John of Batesville, Bill of Oldenburg; sister Frances Borgman of Napoleon, IN; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents. Visitation is Monday, July 20th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21st, at Holy Family Church with Rev. David Kobak O.F.M. officiating, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to Phi Beta Psi Sorority Cancer Research or Hospice of Margaret Mary Hospital.
