Robert R. Logan's Obituary
Robert R. Logan, age 91 of Batesville, died Saturday, April 25, 2009, at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born March 15, 1918 in Rockfield, Indiana, he is the son of Emma (Nee: Kennedy) and Russell Logan. He married Frances Callendar June 16, 1942 in Montgomery, Alabama and she preceded him in death July 28, 2005. Bob served in Army during World War II with the 445th Bomber Squadron, 321st Bomb Group. Bob was proud of his time in the service, seeing extensive action in the European, African and Middle Eastern Europe (EAME) Theater, where he earned 8 bronze stars as well as a Distinguished Unit Citation (the degree of heroism required is the same as that which would warrant award of the Distinguished Service Cross to an individual). He was the Superintendent of Maintenance at Hill-Rom before retiring in 1985 after nearly 30 years. Organizations he belonged to include the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271, a life member of the 57th Bomb Wing Association and a local group called the Gloria Club.Bob enjoyed many interests and hobbies. Not a man of many words, he spent his quiet time working crossword puzzles and was an avid reader, especially books on history and biographies of prominent people. He was a devoted fan of Big Band music as well as the Cincinnati Reds and Indiana University Basketball during the Bobby Knight years. He liked to reminisce about his memories of Florida from his earlier years when he worked in the sugar plantations. Until recently, each year he would put in a garden, although his children “aren’t sure if it was a labor of love or because mom wanted him too.” His family also remembers Bob’s dry sense of humor and the prankster in him. A favorite memory was time he disassembled a buggy and reassembled it on the roof of a grocery store. His son and daughters also fondly recall that dad savored a good shot of whiskey and one of his favorite sayings, “house guests are like fish, after two days both get stinky and need to go.” Bob absolutely loved dogs. A passion that was exceeded only by time spent with his family. He is survived by his daughters Rebecca Best of La Grange, Kentucky, Jacqueline “Spanky” Replogle of Dover, Indiana, Cindy Johnson of Osgood, Indiana; son Jim Logan of Camby, Indiana; sister Phyllis Clifford of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Frances and his parents. Visitation is Wednesday, April 29th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Services are 10 a.m. at the funeral home, Thursday, April 30th, with Rev. Charles Flory officiating. Burial will be in St. Louis Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and the Batesville Ripley Co. V.F.W. Post #3183. The family requests memorials to PAAIN (People Assisting Animals In Need).
