Romilda B. "Millie" Hoff's Obituary
Romilda B. “Millie” Hoff, age 84 of Batesville, died Monday, November 12, 2012 at The Waters of Batesville. Born April 23, 1928 in Franklin County Indiana, she is the daughter of Emma (Nee: Trabel) and George Haas. She married Anthony Hoff April 4, 1951 at St. Joseph’s Church in St. Leon, Indiana and he preceded her in death July 23, 2000. A homemaker and a member of St. Louis Church, she also worked 20 years as a housekeeper for several local families. Millie did a lot of things and did them well. Her family fondly remembers her cooking and baking skills. Those tasty coffee cakes she made on Saturdays, her delicious fried chicken every Sunday followed by a trip to Southgate to visit family and friends and at Christmas time, her sauerkraut balls. According to her family, dancing was something she truly enjoyed. She met Tony at a dance and after their marriage, they regularly attended dances locally in addition to the St. Leon and New Alsace area for years and occasionally Cincinnati as well. She also had a green thumb. In addition to a vegetable garden, she raised flowers and was proud of her roses. According to her family, “mom could raise anything and always had something growing around the house even up until recently.” In her younger days she made many of her family clothes and would take her dog for daily walks through town. Faith was important to Millie. She attended church daily, volunteered an hour regularly at the adoration chapel for several years and watched the Catholic Television Channel EWTN. Millie also liked doing and caring for others, shuttling people back and forth to doctor appointments, hair appointments or wherever they needed to go. Other things the kids recalled about mom was her love of cardinals, that she was proud she shared the same date of birth as Shirley Temple and that when someone had a stomach ache, her remedy was a shot of peppermint schnapps. She is survived by daughters Carol Niese and Nancy Fischmer, both of Batesville; sons George Hoff of Holly Springs, North Carolina, Herbert Hoff of Batesville; brother Carl Haas of Southgate, Indiana; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Loretta Haas, Frances Schuck and brother Oliver Haas. Visitation is Wednesday, November 14th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, November 15th, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Batesville Fire Department or St. Louis School.
