Ruth M. Bland's Obituary
Ruth M. Bland, age 89 of Batesville, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born January 24, 1921 in Ripley County Indiana, she is the daughter of Anna (Nee: Huffmier) and John C. Selke. She married Paul Bland October 31, 1944 at Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah, Georgia. He preceded her in death August 7, 2009.Ruth was a quiet person and her interests reflected that. She liked quilting and had a knack for putting colors and different fabric swatches together to form beautiful designs. As long as her health permitted, each new member of the family received one of her treasured creations. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading and learning new things by watching documentaries. Her family remembers what a good cook and baker she was and those delicious, traditional meals she would prepare at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She is survived by her daughter Deborah Sherman of Monroe, Washington; sons Michael Bland of St. Louis, Missouri, Thomas Bland of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Jeffrey Selke-Minogue of Portland, Oregon; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents she is also preceded in death by sister Nioma Nickel and brothers Earl, Melvin, Nelson, Lester and Irvin Selke.Visitation is Saturday, August 7th, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. William Powlen officiating with burial in St. Louis Cemetery. The family requests memorials to Hospice of Margaret Mary Hospital or St. Andrew’s Activity Fund.
