Sr. Rita A. Howard's Obituary
Sr. Rita Howard, age 88, died Wednesday, April 30th, at the infirmary of the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg. She was born in Washington, IN, and lived there until she earned her nursing degree at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Indianapolis. In December of 1947 she became a member of the Carmelite Sisters on Coldspring Road. Sr. Rita was known for her beautiful singing voice and her skill as a seamstress, helping to produce beautiful liturgical vestments. When the community began to typeset books for several publishing companies, she became skilled in the use of their avant garde compugraphic equipment. In 2008, she moved with the community to Oldenburg.
Sr. Rita is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Steve Sumner, Judy (Sumner) Barnes, Tom Sumner, Vickie (Sumner) Ison, Elizabeth Jane (Sumner) Garcia, Joe Doyle, George Doyle, Rita Doyle, Fred Doyle, and Betty Howard. The funeral liturgy will take place in the chapel of the Franciscan Sisters, 22143 Main Street, Oldenburg, at 10:30 Wednesday, May 7th. There will be no viewing.
