Sister Francis Joan was my 5th grade teacher at St. Ann School in Hamilton Ohio. She was an excellent teacher who made learning fun, and I credit her with inspiring my own teaching career. We kept in touch for years, and when my husband Dan and I got married, Sister was in Kansas City. She had visited Hamilton a few weeks before to attend priestly ordinations of former students, and couldn’t come back for our wedding. She knew we were going west for our honeymoon, and invited us to stay a night with her in Kansas City. Not everyone can say they spent a night of their honeymoon in a convent! The Sisters were very welcoming, and took us out to show us Kansas City by night. When I was growing up, Sister taught the neighborhood kids how to count by sponsoring contests to see who could pull the most weeds from the flower garden in the convent yard. Statues and holy cards were the prizes and many of us still have those gifts. Sister was a major influence in my life and for that I am very grateful! Rest In Peace, Sister!
