Peg Louden Speer Of Monrovia, In
She was my mentor both at ICA and after for many years. When I shared with her my two-fold dream of teaching and social work, she invited me to spend a couple weekends at St. Vincent Orphanage in Vincennes before grad school started. My chief responsibility was getting the girls' hair beautiful for Mass the next morning. Mind you, doing hair was not an area of skill I could claim ownership of. Sr. Laurencia was right beside me, humbly attesting to the same skill level. When I cast doubt on the outcome of my efforts, however, Sr. turned to me, giving me one of those looks and said, "My dear, when you say 'yes' to God, everything will turn out beautifully!" I will always remember her words. You were right, Sr. The girls' hair did turn out beautifully! Thanks for everything!
