Sr. Mary Mark Deters, O.S.F.'s Obituary
Sr. Mary Mark Deters, age 96 of the Srs. of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Indiana, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at the convent. Born December 9, 1913 in Bowling Green, Missouri, she is the daughter of Mary Ann (Nee: Purk) and Herman Deters.She entered the convent June 8, 1932 and made her final vows January 6, 1938. Sr. Mary Mark spent 61 years in education as a teacher and principal in Indiana at the Vincennes Orphanage, St. Louis School in Batesville; St. Anthony’s in Streator, Illinois; Holy Trinity in St. Louis, Missouri, St. Francis in Portage des Sioux, Missouri; St. Anthony’s in Dayton, Ohio, St. James, St. Bonaventure, St. Aloysius and St. Bartholomew in the Cincinnati area as well as St. John XXIII in Middletown, Ohio. She spent 26 years as vice principal in Middletown. Sr. Mary Mark also spent seven years as Education Supervisor for the Cincinnati Archdiocese. In 1998 she was the first recipient of the “Religious of the Year” award from the Archdiocese. In 2000 she was honored in a retirement banquet “Called by Name: A Celebration of Service” for her 61 years of service. She retired to the Motherhouse in 2001. Sr. Mary Mark is survived by her brother Richard Deters of Columbia, Missouri as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Gesina Luebrecht, Sr. Jane Marie Deters O.S.F., Marie Hummel and brothers Louis, Joseph, Henry, Clem, Leo, Herman and Edwin Deters.Visitation is Monday, October 18th, from 1-3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M. officiating and burial will be in the convent cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Srs. of St. Francis, P.O.
