Sr. Helen Saler, O.S.F.'s Obituary
Sr. Helen Saler O.S.F., formerly Sr. Devota, age 85 of the Srs. of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Indiana, died Monday, August 4, 2014 at the convent. Born February 10, 1929 in Enochsburg, Indiana, she is the daughter of Pauline (Nee: Suding) and Charles Saler.
She entered the convent February 2, 1952 and made her final vows August 12, 1957. She spent 22 years as an elementary teacher remembered for her gentle but firm manner of conducting her classes. She would later serve as a principal and eventually at several parishes as Director of Religious Education. Those schools and parishes include St. Marks, Little Flower and St. Michael's in Indianapolis, Indiana, St. Gabriel's in Connersville, Indiana, St. Joseph's in St. Leon, Indiana, St. Lawrence in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, St. Peter's in Chillicothe, Ohio, Our Lady of Mercy in Dayton, Ohio, St. Leo's in Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Peter's in Hamilton, Ohio.
She is survived by her sisters Mary Kipp and Charlotte Redelman; brother Bill Saler and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Martha Clark, Clara Merkel and brothers Sam and Fred Saler. Visitation is Thursday, August 7th, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the convent chapel. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Bill Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the convent cemetery.
