Sr. Paulita Schuman, O.S.F.'s Obituary
Sr. Paulita Schuman O.S.F., age 81 of the Srs. of St. Francis Convent in Oldenburg, Indiana, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born May 30, 1927, in St. Leon, Indiana, she is the daughter of Rose (Nee: Bittner) and John Schuman. Sr. Paulita entered the convent on September 8, 1945 and made her final vows August 12, 1951. For 26 years, she taught at St. Anthony’s in Streator, Illinois; Holy Family in Oldenburg, Indiana, St. Joseph’s in Shelbyville, Indiana; St. Mary’s in New Buffalo, Michigan; Sacred Heart in Fairfield, Ohio and St. Catherine’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1973 she went to Papua New Guinea teaching and also ministering in Adult education, Literacy, Family Planning, as well as serving as the Coordinator at Our Mother of Good Shepherd in Mendi and during her last 11 years there formed a native Sisters’ community presently known as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary. She returned stateside to the Motherhouse in 1998.She is survived by her sisters Lucille Roell of Harrison, Ohio, Sr. Mary Inez Schuman O.S.F. of Oldenburg; brothers Leroy and Albert Schuman, both of West. Harrison, Indiana as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sr. Paulita is also preceded in death by her sister Mary Ann Horstman and brother Paul Schuman. Visitation is Friday, August 29th, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M. officiating. Burial will be in the convent cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Srs. of St. Francis, P.O. Box 100, Oldenburg, IN, 47036.
