Urban H. Blank's Obituary
Urban H. Blank, age 93 of Batesville, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Margaret Mary Hospital. Born November 18, 1915 in Batesville, he is the son of Anne (Nee: Meyer) and Louis Blank. He married Verda Zierer October 4, 1938 at St. Mary’s of the Rock Church in St. Mary’s, Indiana and she preceded him in death January 6, 2008. Urban retired as the Batesville Postmaster in 1973 after 40 years with the post office. He was a member of the Hillcrest Country Club, Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183, St. Louis Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #1461.Urban served in the Army during WWII and throughout his life was very patriotic. He remained concerned about the welfare of returning veterans, especially in recent times as society’s attitude toward these men and women’s efforts began to shift towards apathy. In his high school days, he excelled as a member of the Batesville basketball team. Enjoying sports and growing up in household where his father was a Notre Dame fan, Urban too became an avid Fighting Irish supporter. His true passion though was golf. He played every opportunity he could and would regularly be seen at Hillcrest Country Club. Staying abreast of current events locally and globally was important to him, so the paper and T.V. news were a part of his daily routine. Although he and Verda weren’t frequent travelers, in later years they would spend several weeks each spring and fall in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area of Florida. His family recalls dad as always “being neat and organized.” He routinely helped with chores around the house and they still remember the image of dad sitting at his desk tending to family business. He is survived by his daughters Peg Salatin and Connie Meyer; son Tom Blank, all of Batesville; 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and one great grandchild. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by twin sons Louis and Edward Blank and brother Arnold Blank. Visitation is Wednesday, June 17th, at the funeral home from 9-10:30 a.m. Funeral services follow at 11 a.m. at St. Louis Church with burial in the church cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #217. The family requests memorials to St. Louis School.
