Alanus D. "Doc" Prickel's Obituary
Alanus D. “Doc” Prickel, age 90 of Batesville, died January 22, 2012 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born October 8, 1921 in Morris, Indiana, he is the son of Catherine (Nee: Bruns) and Edward Prickel. He married Martha Dierckman October 20, 1962 at St. Paul’s Church in New Alsace, Indiana and she preceded him in death March 4, 2004. Doc served in the army during World War II, earning three Bronze Stars. After the service, he went to work for the Romweber Furniture Company where he spent 39 years as a cabinet maker before retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Louis Church and a life member of the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183.Doc and Mart were well-known for their green thumb. Each year, their yard was filled with some of the most beautiful flowers in town and everyone remembers the fantastic garden they produced from that small patch in the side yard. In addition to gardening, Doc also enjoyed many other interests. Besides being a cabinet maker, he also liked to do woodworking in his spare time. Doc enjoyed going out to eat and according to his family had quite an appetite although you’d never know by looking at him. He also spent many hours listening to the Reds and would read the Batesville, Osgood, Versailles, Brookville and Cincinnati newspapers from the front page to last page. Some things you might not know about Doc was his love of magazines that sold gadgets and novelties, for many years he and Mart had a booth at the flea market and the enjoyment of sharing stories of his life experiences. Doc is survived by his sister Alma Obermeyer; brother Albert Prickel, both of Batesville and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by an adopted daughter Sr. Tessy Alencherry and adopted son Fr. Anthony Chemmannoor. Visitation is Wednesday, January 25th, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home, with a rosary service at 4 p.m. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday, January 26th, at St. Louis Church with Rev. Randy Summers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to the Batesville V.F.W.
