Dorothy C. "Dot" Harmeyer's Obituary
Dorothy C. “Dot” Harmeyer, age 84 of St. Mary’s, Indiana, died Sunday, August 9, 2009, at her home. Born May 5, 1925 in Batesville, Indiana, she is the daughter of Josephine (Nee: Leising) and Anthony Siefert. She married Arthur Harmeyer September 12, 1951 at St. Louis Church. He preceded her in death December 1, 1991. She was a member of St. Mary’s of The Rock Church and a charter member of the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 Ladies Auxiliary. She worked as a cashier at Kroger’s for 35 years before retiring in the summer of 1992.For Dot, spending time with family was her true passion. The family typically met at her house on Sunday’s, where she would sit on the porch and enjoy time with the grandchildren and watching the great grandchildren play. She loved to watch game shows, especially the Wheel of Fortune as well as the Andy Griffith show and for quiet relaxation she would work crossword puzzles. She raised a large garden each year and canned most of what she raised. The family had gathered the morning she died to put up corn. She was a good cook and her children fondly recall her cookies, fried chicken, ham and Christmas Shrimp “as long as somebody remembered to bring the shrimp.” Dot’s favorite was grits. They also remember her thriftiness and teased her about the large number of coupons she kept to use on her Thursday shopping trips. After a gift from the girls of a trip to Las Vegas several years ago, she acquired an enthusiasm for gaming. Slot machines and cold Bud Light were a perfect combination. While one of her favorite songs was “Rocky Top”, she liked listening to John Denver’s music. Dot is survived by daughters Kathy Wintz of Batesville, Patti Lecher of St. Mary’s, Diane Kessens of Batesville; sons John and Rick of St. Mary’s, Rob of Batesville; 19 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Marcia Belter, Joan Fritsch, Arvilla Prickel and brothers John and Jerome “Jake” Siefert. Visitation is Wednesday, August 12th, from 4-8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, with a rosary service at 7 p.m. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Thursday, August 13th, at St. Mary’s of the Rock Church with Rev. Humbert Moster O.F.M. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to St. Mary’s Church Building Fund.
