Eugene J. Becker's Obituary
Eugene J. Becker, age 79 of Gulf Shores, Alabama and formerly of Batesville, died Saturday, May 9, 2009 in Pensacola, Florida. Born July 7, 1929 in Batesville, he is the son of Ann (Nee: Laudick) and Joseph Becker. Gene served in the Army during the Korean War. He began his working career as a teller at First Bank and Trust in Batesville and in 1968 became Vice-President. First Bank and Trust was later purchased by Fifth-Third and he retired as Vice-President of Fifth-Third Bank in 1989. He is preceded in death by his parents. Gene was a member of St. Louis Church, Batesville Knights of Columbus Council #1461, Batesville Knights of St. John where he was a Fourth Degree Knight, the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271, a former member of the Community Mental Health Foundation Board, a former Jaycees member holding both local and state offices, a volunteer for Margaret Mary Hospital and the National Travel Club.An avid fan of Cincinnati Bengals and Reds as well as the Indiana Pacers and Colts, Gene enjoyed volunteering his free time. After retiring to Gulf Shores in 1996, he volunteered over 1000 hours at the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley, Alabama and joined of Our Lady of the Gulf Church where he was a lector. A member of the Gulf Shores Gulf Coast Area Chamber of Commerce of Alabama, he served as Senior Ambassador. He also joined the Gulf Shores Knights of Columbus and Knights of St. John.He is survived by friend and care giver Marty Penton of Gulf Shores, Alabama.Visitation is Thursday, May 14th, from 9-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Louis Church with Rev. Dennis Duvelius officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3183 and by the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
