Howard O. Vicars' Obituary
Howard O. Vicars, age 72 of Oldenburg, Indiana, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born October 12, 1936 in Terre Haute, Indiana, he is the son of Frances (Nee: Ray) and James Vicars. Howard was an art teacher with the Batesville School Corporation for 37 years before retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Murat Shriners of Indianapolis, the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271 and the West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge #687 A. F. & A. M. He served in the army from 1959-1961. With an interest in history, Howard was a devoted fan of TV’s “The History Channel” and also enjoyed listening to pop music. During his time as a teacher, he was heavily involved with the schools’ extracurricular activities. His favorites were designing and making the decorations for the prom each year and running the down marker on the chain gang during football games. After retiring, he became a regular of the “Coffee Klatch” at McDonald’s in the mornings. He is survived by his sons Eric of Indianapolis, Indiana, Brian of Chicago, Illinois and sister Lenora “Node” McCullough of Indianapolis. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his daughter Bobbi Lynn Vicars; sister Helen McFarland and brothers Ray and Jim Vicars.Visitation is Sunday, February 1st, from 1-5 p.m. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, February 2nd, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Holy Family Cemetery in Oldenburg with military graveside rites conducted by the Batesville V.F.W. Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. The family requests memorials to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association.
