Sr. Joan Elise Smith's Obituary
Sr. Joan Elise Smith, age 83 of the Srs. of St. Francis in Oldenburg died Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born January 23, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio, she is the daughter of Margaret (Nee: Dillon) and George Smith. She entered the convent September 8, 1946 and made her final vows August 12, 1952. A teacher, librarian and media instructor, she taught at Fenwick High School in Middletown, Ohio, Our Lady of Angels in Cincinnati, Ohio, Badin High School in Hamilton, Ohio, Catholic Central High School in Springfield; Holy Trinity, Little Flower, Hispanic Apostolate at St. Mary’s Church and Marian University in Indianapolis, Indiana, Rex Mundi High School in Evansville, Indiana and ICA Academy in Oldenburg. More recently she served in the Batesville Deanery Resource Center until retiring in 2008. She is survived by her sisters Dorothy Colwill of Wickliffe, Ohio, Eleanor Gardner of Hebron, Ohio and Ruth Sweeney of Springfield, Ohio as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Virginia Storek, Sr. Margaret Mary Smith (Sr. Mary Thomas) O.S.F. and brother Jim Smith. Visitation is Tuesday, March 29th from 1-3 p.m. at the Motherhouse Chapel in Oldenburg. Funeral services follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Carl Hawver O.F.M. officiating and burial in the convent cemetery.
