Verena L. Meyer's Obituary
Verena L. Meyer, age 99 of Batesville, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the St. Andrew’s Health Campus in Batesville. Born October 29, 1910 in Ripley County Indiana near St. Nicholas, she is the daughter of Mary (Nee: Behr) and Frank Gindling. She married Raymond Meyer on May 12, 1936 at St. Nicholas Church and was a homemaker as well as a member of St. Louis Church and the Knights of St. John’s Ladies Auxiliary.Verena was a talented piano player with no formal training. She played by ear and could effortlessly pick up a piece of music by listening and would be playing along to the song before it was over. Many older folks will remember the Gindling Band made up of Verena and several of her siblings. For years they played at area dances and functions. She also was an excellent baker and cook. As a child, her daughter remembers mom making coffee cakes on Saturday mornings to fill standing orders for friends and neighbors. As an adult, Marilyn fondly recalls bringing her family to mom’s for those delicious Sunday dinners. Because of her love for music, Verena was a huge fan of the Lawrence Welk Show and in earlier years did quite a bit of needlework and embroidering. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and Jerry Scheele of Indianapolis, two grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by sisters Augusta Eckstein, Rose Eckstein and brothers Leonard, Walter, Michael, Wilber and Edward Gindling. Visitation is Friday, October 15th, from 10 – 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Louis Church with Rev. Bernard Varghese officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the St. Louis Cemetery Fund.
